March Mystery

Darling Girls by Sally Hepworth

My reading list continues in the thriller/mystery vein as of late.

Life right now entails me moving and renovating a house so I am slowing down on my reading.

This is sad, but I am still writing my next novel and this is taking me deeper into the world of mystery and secrets to solve.

This is my second Sally Hepworth novel. I read The Good Sister last February. You can read that book review here.

Darling Girls:

From the outside all looks idyllic, living on a farm, being raised by a smiling young foster mother. But Jessica, Norah and Alicia know a different side of what living with Miss Fairchild is really like. These three young girls were saved and given a chance at a new life.

They were lucky, so they were told.

But there were endless rules, most unspoken in the house. Miss Fairchild was often angry, and the girls never knew what to expect and what was expected of them. They spent years caring for other foster sisters and avoiding Miss Fairchild. The sisters slowly learn to become their own family.

Long after they have left the house at Wild Meadows, the sisters remain close, each others only family. But when a body is discovered under the home where they grew up, they are suddenly asked to return. Each sister revisits their dark past as the lies and truth begin to unravel.

Are they witnesses or are they suspects?

The chapters flash back and forth before and after unfolding the mystery of what took place at Wild Meadows.

This was a fast paced read. Kept me interested and I liked each of the sisters and the way they took care of one another in their own ways. I was rooting for them and curious how it would all unfold.

I enjoyed the twists, some I suspected, others I didn’t. This book kept me engaged until the end.

Strangely enough there were multiple grammatical errors that took me out of the story. It was strange to have that many in one book. Probably I’m being weird.

Otherwise it was a great quick read. This would be a great book on vacation.
